For Design Principal Hoang M Nguyen, having a refined design philosophy is paramount to his role at Playground: helping startups develop their brand vision and products from concept to consumer.
Good design is "fifty percent aesthetics and visuals," he says. "The other half is personality and attitude. Seasons change, looks change, colors change, trends change." Hoang keeps his approach adaptive and flexible, exploring innovative designs while staying focused on the needs of both users and entrepreneurs.
Often hardware design projects are “thrown over the fence, you never know what happens afterward” he says. "One of the appeals of Playground is its integrated approach to product development, design ideas are much more likely to materialize," he says.
“I get to see it from conception to production. To think about branding and positioning” but also “have a voice all the way through. That's what's appealing for me here at Playground, especially being surrounded by so many smart people.”
Together with his brother Anh , also a Playground designer, Hoang created an eye-catching industrial-design collective called Creative Session and served as a 2015 Core77 Design Awards judge.
Hoang and Anh “we can be silly, we can be serious, we can be fun,” he says, adding that they try not to overthink things but rather let them naturally flow.
“A huge part of design is empathy,” Hoang says. “It’s acquired over time.”
